What an ATS really does
It's less a gatekeeper than a database. So a good resume for an ATS has two jobs: be read correctly, and be found.
- 1
It reads your resume
A parser pulls the text out of your file and sorts it into your name, jobs, dates, education and skills.
- 2
It stores you as a record
Your application becomes a candidate record, kept beside everyone else who applied for the job.
- 3
A recruiter searches
Recruiters search and filter those records by skills, titles and experience, then open the resumes that match.
Why one column matters
Two columns look tidy to a person. A parser that reads straight across the page can mix them, and your skills end up inside your job history.

How Behired keeps your resume readable
Keywords from the job posting
Recruiters find candidates by searching for skills and titles. Paste the posting and you see its must-have and preferred keywords, which your resume has and which are missing. Add the ones your experience supports.
Must-have keywords
- Project management
- Excel
- SQL
- Power BI
Preferred keywords
- Jira
- PRINCE2
Templates that parsers read in order
Templates in the ATS-compliant group have one column of real text. Automated tests read each one back and check the reading order and every field. Two-column templates sit in their own group, marked Not ATS-optimized.
A check on every PDF
Behired checks each file it makes: the text can be extracted, the fonts are embedded and everything you wrote is in the file. If a check fails, you're told at the download, and which part to look at.
Hints while you write
Behired points out what can trip up a parser or a recruiter, such as a section heading that isn't a standard one. You decide what to change.

Frequently asked questions
What is an ATS?
An applicant tracking system is the software employers use to collect applications. It reads each resume into a candidate record, and recruiters search those records for the skills and experience a job needs.
Does an ATS reject resumes automatically?
Rarely on its own. Most decisions are made by recruiters, who search and filter candidates. The usual exception is a screening question on the application form, such as a required license, which the employer can set to rule out an application.
Does an ATS give my resume a score?
Not one you can see. The "ATS scores" that online checkers show are their own rules of thumb, not what an employer's system does. Behired doesn't give you an ATS score. It shows you the posting's keywords, which you have and which are missing.
PDF or Word: which is better for an ATS?
Modern systems read a text-based PDF well. Trouble comes from scans and from design tools that turn text into shapes. Behired's PDFs are real text, and if a job posting asks for Word, you can download that too with Pro.
Should I use the same keywords as the job posting?
Yes, where they're true. A recruiter's search looks for exact words, so "project management" and "managed projects" aren't always the same thing. Don't hide keywords in white text: the parser reads them anyway and the recruiter sees them.
Can Behired guarantee my resume gets through?
No, and nobody can: every employer sets up its system differently. Behired makes sure your resume can be read and shows you the keywords the posting asks for. The experience is yours.
Is it free?
You can try it for free, no card needed: 2 resumes and 2 job applications, each with a tailored resume, in every template. Downloading your resume as a PDF or Word file is part of Pro, along with unlimited job applications, cover letters and interview prep.
