What makes a resume Canadian

Employers in Canada read resumes with a few conventions in mind. Behired lays out yours to them and points out what to change.

  1. 1

    Contact details, nothing personal

Your name, city and province, phone and email. A photo, date of birth, nationality or marital status isn't expected; if your CV has them, Behired flags each one so you can take it out.

  2. 2

    A summary, not an objective

Three or four lines on what you bring, where a CV from home often opens with a career objective. Behired points out an objective so you can rewrite it.

  3. 3

    Results, not duties

Each bullet says what you did and what came of it, with the numbers you have. When you apply for a job, Behired can rewrite your bullets this way for the posting.

  4. 4

Letter paper, two pages at most

Sized for Letter, not A4, and fitted to two pages, the length Job Bank advises. If it still runs long, Behired tells you.

Some things only you can decide. Behired flags a street address, references, or a mention of your SIN, religion or immigration status, so you can take them out.

Behired's first step: upload a file, import from LinkedIn or paste text.
  2. 2

    Create your free account

Sign up with Google, Facebook or your email to save your resume. No card needed.

Behired's second step: continue with Google or Facebook, or create an account with your email and a password.
  3. 3

    Get your Canadian resume

It opens in Behired's editor in Canadian format, on Letter paper and two pages at most. If your CV carries a photo, date of birth or marital status, Behired flags it as not expected in Canada so you can take it out. Edit any line and pick a template.

Know where you stand before you apply

With the posting in hand, Behired checks your resume against it: what already works in your favour, and the gaps worth addressing, like a provincial rule the role expects you to know.

A job match for a Project Coordinator role in Toronto: a perfect match, strengths in project coordination and scheduling, and one minor gap, Ontario construction practices and the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Canadian resume format?

A Canadian resume fits on one or two pages of Letter paper and lists your most recent job first. It opens with your name, city and province, phone and email, then a short summary, your experience with results, your education and skills. A photo, date of birth, nationality and marital status are not expected.

Should I put a photo on my resume in Canada?

No. A photo isn't expected on a Canadian resume, and neither are your date of birth, nationality or marital status. If your CV has them, they stay on your resume until you take them out, and Behired flags each one as not expected in Canada.

How long should a resume be in Canada?

Two pages at most, as Job Bank advises; one page is fine early in your career. Behired fits your resume to two pages and tells you if it still runs over, so you can shorten the earlier roles.

What's the difference between a CV and a resume in Canada?

For most jobs in Canada you send a resume: a short document tailored to the role. A CV usually means a longer academic or medical record of your career. If you have a CV from another country, upload it as it is and Behired turns it into a resume.

What can I build my resume from?

A PDF, Word file or photo of your current resume or CV, up to 15 MB. You can also import your LinkedIn profile or paste your work history as text.

Will my resume get through applicant tracking systems?

Pick a template marked ATS-compliant: those are tested with ATS parsers. When you apply for a job, Behired can tailor a copy of your resume to the posting and work in its key terms where your experience supports them.

Is the Canadian resume builder free?

You can try it for free, no card needed: 2 resumes and 2 job applications, each application with a tailored resume, all of them editable in every template. Downloading your resume as a PDF or Word file is part of Pro, at CA$24 a month, along with unlimited job applications, cover letters and interview prep. Cancel in two clicks.

Can I edit my resume after Behired builds it?

Yes. Edit every line, switch templates, change colours and fonts. With Pro, download it as a PDF or a Word file.
